UPCOMING FEATURES OF APHELION JREs and JDE

Aphelion JREs

  • Reference implementations of JREs for more RTOS/processor target platforms.

  • JREs compatible with the J2SE Java 1.5 platform(*) that support a number of Java 1.5 features relevant to embedded systems(*) and include the J2SE 1.5 compatible APIs from GNU Classpath needed for implementing such features.
(*) Each accepts the JAR files in the Java 1.5 format.
(**) The Java 1.5 features such as: generics, varargs, enhanced for loop, autoboxing, static imports, type safe collection classes and enums, thread pools, and concurrent processing APIs (as defined by JSR-166).

  • JREs that include the ports of additional client-server runtimes and application-level packages from providers of open-source Java software or IBM.

  • JREs for embedded systems used in safety-critical and mission-critical devices.
Note that Apogee is one of the companies sponsoring the JSR-302, the purpose of which is to define the Safety Critical Java Specification.

  • A Just-Ahead-of-Time (JAOT) compiler capable of compiling into native (binary) code "hot" bytecode methods(*) of bytecode class files being loaded by J9VM. Based on IBM's JIT compiler technology, JAOT compiler will improve the runtime performance of RTSJ-compliant JREs by up to 10 times.
(*) Methods that are likely to have significant impact on runtime performance (for example, "leaf" methods invoked inside loops).
Aphelion JDE

  • Configurations of the JDE for additional RTOS/processor target platforms.

  • Additional tools, such as a server-resident JAOT compiler capable of compiling "hot" bytecode methods of bytecode class files about to be downloaded on to a given JRE. There will also be a configuration of this compiler capable of compiling "hot" bytecode methods of OSGI bundles just prior to passing each such bundle on to a client device running Aphelion JRE.

  • The JDEs bases on the Eclipse Open Platform rather then IBM's WSDD. (IBM is phasing out WSDD and will soon start promoting more actively the Eclipse Open Platorm.)
